Race Report: Round 4, 2016/2017 ACC Production Race Series, 7 Jan 2017, Taupo

Updated: Feb 27, 2019

Weather: Fine, warm, dry, windy.

Qualifying: First time running the full A1GP circuit was exciting but meant we had realistic expectations about what we’d be able to do in Qualifying. With high temperatures, the very abrasive surface and some experienced competitors complaining of a green, slippery track, we opted for the hard compound tyres and set about posting a time. A 1.49 was the result which placed us 6th overall out of 25 starters for the first race.

Race 1: 6 Laps, qualifying order start.

Great start with the AWD proving its worth had me up to3rd by the first corner, the big slide that followed in turn 4 may have looked great but didn’t help speed, dropping me down to 7th. Still learning the track and trying to get heat into the hard compound tyres resulted in plenty more moments that belonged in a D1NZ drift race, but I was able to battle back up the field by the time the chequered flag dropped.

Result: 4th overall

Race 2: 6 laps, reverse grid handicap start.

The day was getting hotter so we reasoned that the hard tyres may get into their working zone a little more and left them on. This was a handicap race start and I was pushing hard from the outset... Maybe a little too hard it turns out with a high speed spin being the result. Thankfully I kept it on the track but only had a few laps left to salvage some points from the back of the field. Running in clear air gave me some valuable time to really get to grips with the track and I was able to run down some of the back markers.

Result: 11th overall

Race 3: 6 laps, reverse grid handicap start.

The hard tyres never really did work so for the last race the team swapped over to softs. Another handicap start so we had it all to do to ensure a good result for this doublepoints round! I got away well and for the first half of the lap followed a very quick Honda around whilst trying to see what the different tyres were doing. The difference was phenomenal, so I opened the taps and went for it. The car felt great and we were getting through the field very well – well enough to put us in the lead by lap 3!!

Result: 1st overall

As always, a huge ‘Thank you’ to the Hall Speed Sport team, various supporters, Motul New Zealand, Racelign Suspension, Production Race Series Coordinators and all our Facebook ‘likers’. Bring on Round 5!!
