Race Report: Round 2, 2019/2020 ACC Production Race Series, 6 October 2019, Pukekohe Park Raceway
Conditions: Hot. Dry.
Qualifying: After round 1 we'd put on some brand new Yokohama A048's and put a new front splitter and undertray on in an effort to get a bit more grip and top end speed. We'd also put in a new set of Winmax W6.5 compound pads in the rear, so used qualifying to bed those in and get a feel for how the car worked with the changes. 10th out of 29 starters wasn't quite where we'd hoped to start, but the car was feeling very strong, so there was no need to panic.
Race 1 (8 Lap sprint, qualifying order start): There were a number of very quick cars out to play but the little Subaru's rocket start had us up 5 places into 5th by the first corner. That was great, but the chaos that ensued into turn 2 was not so wonderful. Reece Killingback's monster V8 Mercedes dropped an oil line and the resulting oil on his rear tyres and most of turn 2 had cars of the track in all directions!! The 3 cars ahead of the incident scampered away and built a nice gap that we couldn't close down. Just getting through the race while navigating the oil on the track was enough of an achievement, but just missing a podium was a bonus for sure!
Result: 3rd Overall.
Race 2 (1 hour endurance race, qualifying order start): Into the heat of the day and the Production Race Series rolled onto the grid for the first 1 hour enduro of the season. Given the way we finished the last 1 hour race (see round 6 2018/19 blog), there was definitely a strong focus on getting this one right! A solid start and we were circulating nicely in 3rd until lap 14 where a safety car and a great call from Scott in the pits saw us dive in for our compulsory pitstop. Slick work had us back out in 5th but the cars in front hadn't yet pitted... Cue the charge for the next 15 laps until we got into top spot. During the closing stages we had to manage the gap to a hard-charging rising star in Peter Vodanovich in his Toyota 86, but with that taken care of, the perfect result and response was in the bag.
Result: 1st Overall
Race 3 (8 laps, reverse grid handicap start): Unfortunately we'd blown a rear CV boot during the previous race and heading out for an 8 lap sprint was going to be a gamble. The joint was packed full of Motul's finest tech grease and all fingers were crossed. Starting off in 14th with some serious machinery trying to chase us down whilst trying to nurse out hobbled car was a bit tense, but we love the reverse grid races and the car hung on for the chequered flag just a few places shy of number 1.
Result: 4th Overall
Great day out at the races, and back on track after a disappointing round 1. We're now currently sitting 3rd in the points overall heading to the Bruce McLaren Motorsport park in Taupo at the end of November.
