Race Report: Round 4, 2018/2019 ACC Production Race Series, 10 February 2018, Hampton Downs

Updated: May 1, 2019

Conditions: Hot. Some breeze & track low on grip.

Qualifying: It was a baking hot day for round 4 of the Production Race Series but fresh repairs on some sections of track and a general lack of grip meant everyone was struggling for pace in qualifying. We still put the car into 3rd place for the first race but it was over 2 seconds down on our PB at Hamptons Downs National circuit.

Race 1 (8 Lap sprint, qualifying order start): With both ambient and track temperatures starting to climb and a little rubber laid down the track was starting to generate a bit more grip. Everyone fired into turn one jostling for position and we emerged into second place. The remaining 8 laps consisted of holding that spot from a very quick 5.6 litre V8 Mercedes.

Result: 2nd Overall.

Race 2 (6 laps, reverse grid handicap start): The first of the handicap races was in early afternoon and even though we had to climb through the traffic, we still managed to lower our time from qualifying by 0.7 of a second. This showed the track was getting quicker, but even though we’d put a fresh load of Motul 10w40 300V oil into the motor, it was struggling in the heat compared to the non-turbo engine cars. The water sprayer for the intercooler was completely empty after the race which only backed this up. We got up into 4th by the end of an intense 6 laps which was as much as we could manage.

Result: 4th Overall

Race 3 (10 laps, reverse grid handicap start): The longest race of the day in mid afternoon was a challenge for car and driver alike. The air temp had dropped a little allowing the motor a slight reprieve, but the track had been baking in the all-day sun. We could see a few cars were struggling with tyre temps, but our Yokohama A048’s in a medium compound were hanging on lap after lap. Starting from near the back of the field, the car was flying and we gained the lead with a lap to spare as well as setting the PB of the day with a 1.15.8. Still a lot slower than our best but as good as we good manage on the day.

Result: 1st Overall

Race 4 (8 laps, reverse grid handicap start): By the time the last race of the day came around, it had mercifully cooled off a little. On the negative side, our times from earlier in the day had relegated us to start in dead last place and 90 seconds after the first car. We’d settled into a good rhythm in the previous race and picked up where we left off and hammered round consistently in the high 1.15’s. Ultimately we couldn’t get onto the podium but another solid finish rounded out a solid day and saw us maintain our place at the top of the championship points table for both class B and overall.

Result: 4th Overall
